What intrigues/excites you most about going to Ecuador?

Ecuador offers endless opportunities to explore, grow, and find inspiration, as its rich history and unique characteristics make it an endlessly fascinating place to discover. From the perspective of a Biology student, Ecuador is the perfect place to study due to the incredible diversity, from the awe-inspiring Andes to the species-rich Galapagos Islands. I’m so excited to get to know the people of Ecuador and to have the opportunity to immerse myself in their culture!

What is one of your favorite childhood memories?

Growing up on a farm, I have wonderful memories involving the births of my goats and horses. I remember sprinting home to tell my mom of the news after discovering a new kid, wobbly and curious, taking its first steps in our pasture! It taught me how to respect life and act responsibly, with my actions affecting all other life on the farm.

What makes you most curious (in life, in general)?

Places that have preserved their traditions despite modernization greatly intrigue me and spark my curiosity. I’m attracted to cultures in Tibet, specifically Ladakh, as I’ve read of their intricate agricultural systems and their loving beliefs. One of my favorite books is “Ancient Futures”, by Helena Norberg-Hodge. It tells of the kind hearted people of Tibet and the impact of globalization/urbanization. I’d love to experience these rural areas and help preserve these sacred ways of living. I’m loving learning about the Native peoples of Ecuador and can’t wait to actually get to witness these cultures in action.

What lights your fire and gets you fully engaged in life?

Mountain biking has become a passion of mine, as I love the intensity and the way in which I push myself when on a difficult trail. It’s incredibly satisfying to end your day outdoors knowing you gave your all and overcame certain fears (for me, it’s sharp, sudden turns!)

Share a little about your family. My mom and sister live in Kernville, California, where I grew up. My mom and dad were photographers for National Geographic, travelling the globe together, living with indigenous cultures in places such as Namibia and Siberia. Their love of travel helped foster a desire to explore within me. Since my dad passed away, the adventure stories telling of his travels with my mom are incredibly special to the whole family, as we remember him and the impact he had on so many lives. I’m always grateful for the constant support and love I receive from my family and can’t wait to tell them all about Ecuador!
