Interview with a Word

Now in our second week of the spring semester,  students are taking new classes and learning new concepts and ideas.  Sometimes new concepts means learning new vocabulary.  This imgresdiscipline specific vocabulary may be difficult for the students to understand or grasp.  One vocabulary strategy is to have students interview a word.  To do this, have a list of words that relate to your discipline or unit and a list of questions that can be asked of the word.   First, split your class into teams of 2-4 students.   Give each group a word and questions to answer.  The groups spend time acting as the word to brainstorm answers to the questions.   After the students have practiced answering the questions, then you interview each of the teams to see if they know the answers.  This could turn into a mini warm up activity to get the students thinking about words from the reading.  Another variation is making this a trivia game.
