Providing students with opportunities to read and review feedback allows them time and space to apply the feedback and hopefully improve student learning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently I completed an online short course, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onehe.org\/courses\/supporting-students-use-of-feedback-2-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Supporting students\u2019 use of feedback\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered by Dr. Naomi Winstone, a cognitive psychologist specializing in the processing and impact of instructional feedback.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My main take-away from the course is that we need to think about ways to support the development of student \u201cfeedback literacy\u201d and not assume that students can understand and apply the feedback we give them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>According to Winstone, feedback literacy is \u201cthe ability to understand feedback and use it productively\u201d and \u201crequires learners to act upon comments that they have received.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winstone proposes a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsibility sharing model<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where both students and faculty can take steps to enhance the feedback process in four key areas:<\/span><\/p><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6832 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-11.27.34-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-11.27.34-AM.png 609w, https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-11.27.34-AM-300x93.png 300w, https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-11.27.34-AM-230x71.png 230w, https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-11.27.34-AM-350x108.png 350w, https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-11.27.34-AM-480x148.png 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things for faculty to try:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give students opportunities in class to read and reflect on feedback.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design assignments and assessments so that \u201cfeedback has a \u2018landing place\u2019 \u2013 i.e. somewhere for students to apply the feedback you give.\u201d This might include requiring students to revise an assignment or intentionally building a progression of assignments. For example, have students do a brief \u201c2-minute talk\u201d early in the semester and then apply the feedback they receive to a presentation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give students feedback that is \u201cactionable.\u201d e.g. instead of saying \u201cyour writing is not clear\u201d suggest a step the student can take such as \u201cfind your longest sentences and rewrite them into shorter, clearer sentences.\u201d<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acknowledge that receiving and implementing feedback is challenging for all of us. Share your own experiences receiving and using feedback and strategies that have worked for you when receiving and applying feedback related to your own work.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding and applying feedback takes intentional focus and practice.
