{"id":1909,"date":"2016-04-12T10:48:12","date_gmt":"2016-04-12T16:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/?p=1909"},"modified":"2016-04-12T10:48:40","modified_gmt":"2016-04-12T16:48:40","slug":"i-finished-the-test-now-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/i-finished-the-test-now-what\/","title":{"rendered":"I finished the test: Now what?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I just completed my third half marathon.\u00a0 I seem to have the habit of training really hard for the event at hand and then stopping until I have to start training from the beginning to get ready for the next race. For the first time in my running career, I\u2019m wondering what to do instead of becoming a couch potato.\u00a0 While discussing this with a friend, she suggested that I do some research.\u00a0 I did, and I found that I should spend a few days after an event doing normal activity and work on maintaining my fitness.\u00a0 As I was reading about this, I couldn\u2019t help but wonder how this relates to my courses and teaching.\u00a0 Do my students feel they\u2019re running a half (or even full) marathon?\u00a0 Am I helping them with a training plan or asking them to just run the race at the end?<\/p>\n<p>While I was training, there were specific days of cross-training, running, and stretching, and this reminds me of my students. \u00a0How I am supporting their training (learning)?\u00a0 How am I challenging them along the way to prepare them for the assignment, test, or paper?\u00a0 What have I implemented in my course that allows them some time to rest and recoup or really stop and reflect on what they have learned?<\/p>\n<p>The semester is coming to a close, so I know that every moment counts (see more on this here: <a href=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/?p=1845\">Make it Count!<\/a>). I plan to check in with my students for these last few days and see how they\u2019re doing.\u00a0 Are they understanding the objectives of the course?\u00a0 Can they answer the question we\u2019ve been working on all semester?\u00a0 Do they feel they\u2019ve improved as writers and readers?
