“When you give directions for multiple tasks simultaneously, don’t give everyone directions for all the tasks. It wastes time, it’s confusing, and it calls too much attention to task variance. The trick, then, is how to let everyone know what to do without giving whole-group directions. Here are some hints and possibilities…” (Carol Ann Tomlinson, 1999, p. 101). The following is a list of ideas to help give thoughtful directions based on Tomlinson’s ideas.
- Use task cards to give directions or roles to individuals and groups
- Use [recorded] directions
- Display directions visually with a PowerPoint or some other program
- Provide graphic organizers to help clarify expectations for the assigned task
