On Wednesday morning, Czech poet Petr Borkovec and Irish poet Justin Quinn visited our class to read from their books and talk all things poetry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Petr Borkovec<\/strong> is a Czech poet, prose writer, translator, and author of children’s books. He writes regular columns and short prose for magazines Full Moon, A2, czech radio station Vltava, iLiteratura and Slovak revue Frakt\u00e1l. His most recent books are the short story collection\u00a0Lido di Dante<\/em>\u00a0(2017), the poetry collection\u00a0Herbarium to something worse<\/em>\u00a0(2018), the children’s book\u00a0Every Thing Has Something to Do with Happiness<\/em>\u00a0(2018), the prose collection\u00a0Pet\u0159\u00ed\u010dek Sellier & Pet\u0159\u00ed\u010dek Bellot<\/em>\u00a0(2019), the short stories\u00a0Collect the Stick<\/em>\u00a0(2020; expanded edition 2022), and the poems for youth\u00a0Blue Agave<\/em>\u00a0(2021). In 2022 he published\u00a0Observation Exercises (Officina Praga)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin Quinn <\/strong>was born in Dublin, and educated there at Trinity College (BA & PhD). With David Wheatley, he was a founding editor of the Irish poetry magazine,\u00a0Metre<\/em>. His translations of the Czech poet Petr Borkovec,\u00a0From the Interior<\/em>, appeared in 2008 from Seren. He also lectures at the\u00a0Department of English, Faculty of Education, University of West Bohemia. In 2017 his translations of Bohuslav Reynek,\u00a0The Well at Morning: Selected Poems, 1925-197<\/em>1, were published by Karolinum, with essays by Martin C. Putna and Ji\u0159\u00ed \u0160er\u00fdch. His translations of Jan Z\u00e1brana\u2019s poetry,\u00a0The Lesser Histories<\/em>, were published in 2022 by Karolinum\/University of Chicago Press. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internationally acclaimed poets, Petr and Justin are also good friends and often collaborate on their writing and translations. Their poetry reading was informal, full of banter, and deeply engaged in the possibilities of poetry across cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
