On Wednesday morning, we made our way to the Gallery of Václav Špála to meet with Czech artist Ivana Lomová and see her new exhibition, “Mia Camera.”
Ivana Lomová is a painter, illustrator and draftsman. In the years 1978–1983, she studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague. Since the end of the 80s, she has been involved in illustration, comics, cartoons and graphics. Since the 1990s, the focus of her work has gradually shifted to painting. In 1995, Ivana Lomová won the 1994 Graphic Award, in 2006 the third Art Colony Award (Avsenik, Slovenia), in 2010 she became a finalist in the Celeste Prize, an international award for contemporary painting.

Ivana Lomová’s paintings often depict experiences and images from ordinary everyday life and the dramas and meanings hidden behind these moments.
Throughout her career, she has been interested in themes of memory, childhood, ageing, and the relationships between humans and our surroundings.
During our time with Ivana, she led us through the gallery and talked about her new works, which depict and re-imagine her memories of interior spaces from childhood and the photos of her friends and family from when they were little.
Other paintings in “Mia Camera” depict fictionalized scenes that Ivana has seen in films over the years, as well as the natural deterioration of buildings during the Communist era.
As we walked through the exhibition with Ivana, she answered questions and talked about her creative practice and approaches to oil painting.
