The “Day Trip” is an assignment in English 243: Theory as Practice on Location where students explore the Czech Republic beyond Prague in small, assigned groups (each group decides together on a location in the Czech Republic). The students can go as far away as they want in the country, as long as they can go and return in a single day.
Last Thursday, students traveled to four different places:
- Brianna, Olivia, and Dammy traveled to Liberec to visit the Oblastní Gallery and explore the city.
- Kyrstyn, Ben, and Nate traveled to Moravský Krumlov to see the famous “Slav Epic” by Alphonse Mucha.
- Kylie, Valeria, and Ari traveled to Poděbrady to experience the city’s famous mineral water and to see Francisco Goya’s engravings at the Ludvík Kuby Gallery.
- Sophie, Klaudija, and Nathan traveled to Český Krumlov to explore the castle, cathedral, and gardens.
After our metaphysical meeting this morning, students shared stories and highlights from their travels.
Brianna showed sketches from the collections at the Oblastní Gallery.
Kyrstyn showed the catalog of Mucha’s “Slav Epic.”
Ben described how the large canvases of the Slav Epic were displayed.
Ari shared photos of Goya’s engravings.
Ben sampled the strong-tasting mineral water from Poděbrady, which Kylie, Valeria, and Ari collected from a fountain and brought back to Prague.
Sophie showed a sketch from “an archway over a walkway that leads to the Vltava river” in Český Krumlov.
I asked the students to share photos from their trips. Here they are!
