Gallery Visit and Language Class

This morning, we made our way to Hunt Kastner Gallery in the Žižkov neighborhood of Prague. Here we are climbing the hills to the gallery!

At the gallery, we heard from gallery director Katherine Kastner, who opened the gallery with Camille Hunt in 2005 with the aim of exhibiting contemporary Czech artists. Hunt Kastner is one of the most successful and highly-acclaimed contemporary galleries in the Czech Republic.

Here Kastner is telling us about her background in art programming and gallery management. Born in the United States, where her mother immigrated before the communist regime, Kastner returned to the Czech Republic after 1989 and has been living in Prague for almost thirty years.

She also talked about Hunt Kastner’s exhibition “formula,” which supports both young artists as well as those from the middle generation, and helps to develop their connections with the international art world.

The gallery is currently in the process of installing an international group show, titled, “Fruit bursts on your lips.” Opening next week, the show “asks how we can experience domesticity while resisting its oppressive undertones, particularly in relation to femininity.”

We had the chance to walk through the gallery, see the instal process, and ask questions about the gallery and upcoming show, which features work by artists Valentýna Janů, Marie Lukáčová, Marie Tučková, and Lou Lou Sainsbury.

After our visit to the gallery, we broke for lunch and then met up with Marketa for our second to last Czech language class!
