Trading Cards, Printmaking, Name Day, and a Movie . . .

During this morning’s meeting, we shared trading cards from our 4th “Prague Is Your Teacher” day.

This week, two students visited Prague’s botanical gardens. Another student experienced Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at the Klementinum. Another student read legends about the famous Charles Bridge and then spent time at the bridge itself. Others went to the Miniature Museum, an aerial dance performance at the Palladium, the Vltava River, and more.

Here is a picture of all the trading cards together.

In the afternoon, a third group of students — Brianna, Kyrstyn, and Dammy — visited printmaker Pavel Piekar in his Hradčanska studio to make lino prints.

Here they are on their way to Pavel’s studio!

Once again, Pavel began by showing the prints that the last group of students made. He also talked about techniques and approaches to lino prints

Next, Pavel looked at each student’s sketchbook to help them decide which drawing to use for their print.

Then it was time to draw the sketch on the linoleum and carve the surface.

Photos of the final print to come — stay tuned! In the meantime, here are Ben, Olivia, and Kylie looking at the prints they made the week before.

In the evening, we celebrated Kylie’s Czech name day — Sylvie!

Then we watched Conspiracy (2001), which portrays the infamous Wannsee Conference of 1942 where the Nazis, chaired by SS General Reinhard Heydrich, decided on the “Final Solution of the Jewish Problem.”

This week, we are learning about Heydrich’s role as the Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia as well as the Czech agents who assassinated him in Prague a few months after the Wannsee Conference.
