Dr. Emily Sydnor is an assistant professor of political science at Southwestern University. Her research focuses on political communication and psychology, and her 2019 book, Disrespectful Democracy: The Psychology of Political Incivility, explores how individual-level predispositions towards conflict and an uncivil media environment interact to shape political behavior.

She received her MA and PhD in Politics from the University of Virginia and a BA in Political Communication from George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs. Dr. Sydnor is the recipient of the 2020 Craig L. Brians Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Leadership and Mentorship from the American Political Science Association (APSA) and was a member of APSA’s inaugural Institute for Civically Engaged Research, which focuses on building reciprocal relationships between academia and community organizations to improve governance and solve social and political problems.
