What has been the most meaningful idea you’ve discovered or learned so far in preparation for your study abroad to Finland?
I love how the Finns value the individual rather than scores in school. That’s such a unique approach, especially in today’s world, which places a high emphasis on success through grades. I wonder how that impacts self-esteem in children!
For me, the Finland Study Abroad is an opportunity to…
slow down, challenge my beliefs, learn about & experience a new culture. It’s also certainly an experience to really enjoy and make the best out of cold weather.
What do you want to be better at?
Instead of being fixed on an idea I have in mind, I would like to think outside the box more. One big goal I have for this program is learning to slow down and take things as they come, knowing that I’m prepared and ready to tackle whatever challenges are thrown at me.
How does learning about Finnish education, sustainability, and culture shape the way you view, and want to engage with, the world?
Education is the foundation of all knowledge. Sustainability makes individuals mindful consumers, aware of their environment as well as how to preserve it. Culture can help establish a sense of belonging; it comes along with values and norms that we can accept or challenge.
All these components deeply shape the way I see the world, interact with the people and places I see, and I would love to continue to challenge my beliefs and form a character that is true to who I am, and mindful of others’ experiences.
