What has been the most meaningful idea you’ve discovered or learned so far in preparation for your study abroad to Finland?

The most meaningful thing I’ve discovered so far is the idea that play is a basic human right.  Learning should be fun and engaging, and schools should be designed around that.  Students retain more information when they are engaged and social.  Play does not need to stop at a young age.  It is important for everyone!

For me, the Finland Study Abroad is an opportunity to…

For me, the Finland Study Abroad is an opportunity to strengthen and deepen my beliefs as an educator.  I want to observe their educational system, better understand what aspects of it make it the best in the world, and implement what I learned into my career.  Additionally, this abroad is an opportunity for me to explore and learn about a new culture and way of life.

What do you want to be better at?

I want to be better at living more simply.  In Finland, they have a very important phrase: “less is more”.  My life can typically be chaotic and a little messy, so I want to learn how to achieve everything I need to in a calmer, more peaceful, less stressful way.
How does learning about Finnish education, sustainability, and culture shape the way you view, and want to engage with, the world?

Learning about Finnish education, sustainability, and culture makes me have more respect for the world.  I see that peace and harmony exist and are achievable.  It is so easy to see the world as a dark and awful place, but Finland is a glimmer of hope.  They have a shared respect for humanity, and that is vital for today’s world.  The respect they have for education, living sustainably, and their culture is very admirable.
