{"id":3295,"date":"2019-02-14T05:28:47","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T05:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/acorn\/?p=3295"},"modified":"2019-02-14T17:22:21","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T17:22:21","slug":"hunting-for-hearts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/acorn\/2019\/02\/14\/hunting-for-hearts\/","title":{"rendered":"Hunting for Hearts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Materials:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><br>Colored rice<br>Small plastic pink hearts and red hearts from a dollar store<br>A sheet of paper with pink and red hearts printed all over it<br>Tongs (optional)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Directions:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><br>You can put white rice in a casserole dish or a tub.\u00a0If you prefer to color it, put the white rice (about 2 cups at a time) in a Ziploc bag.\u00a0 Add a few drops of food coloring and a teaspoon of white vinegar to the Ziploc before sealing it completely.\u00a0Once sealed, squeeze the bag with your hands continuously until the color is evenly distributed throughout.\u00a0Spread the colored rice out to dry on a piece of newspaper or wax paper.\u00a0It should dry in about an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make a heart sheet similar to the one in the picture by printing clipart hearts from your computer.\u00a0It\u2019s helpful to make the hearts on your sheet about the same size as the plastic hearts.\u00a0Make half of the hearts red, the other half spink.\u00a0 Once the rice is in a container, bury several red hearts and pink hearts in the rice.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenge your child to use the tongs to find a heart and place it on the correct color heart on the sheet.\u00a0If the tongs are too hard to use, let him place the heart using his fingers.\u00a0It\u2019s still a valuable fine-motor skill to practice the pincer grip to pick up and place the heart on the sheet.\u00a0If you choose to work <em>with <\/em>your child, find a heart yourself and place it on the sheet.\u00a0The more you are engaged in what your child is doing, the longer the activity will hold his interest!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/acorn\/files\/2019\/02\/Hunting-for-Hearts-Mason-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/acorn\/files\/2019\/02\/Hunting-for-Hearts-Mason-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/acorn\/files\/2019\/02\/Hunting-for-Hearts-Mason-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Materials:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Colored riceSmall plastic pink hearts and red hearts from a dollar storeA sheet of paper with pink and red hearts printed all over itTongs (optional) Directions:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You can put white rice in a casserole dish or a tub.\u00a0If you prefer to color it, put the white rice (about 2 cups at a time) in &hellip;
