{"id":3182,"date":"2019-01-18T04:08:48","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T04:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/acorn\/?p=3182"},"modified":"2019-01-18T16:45:58","modified_gmt":"2019-01-18T16:45:58","slug":"learning-about-opposites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/acorn\/2019\/01\/18\/learning-about-opposites\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning about Opposites"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong>  A book or two about opposites for preschoolers (I\u2019ve listed a few in the favorite books section)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> <\/strong>Physical pairs of opposite items that children can manipulate, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A heavy rock \/ a feather or cotton ball<\/li><li>A small block \/ a large block<\/li><li>A wet sponge \/ a dry sponge<\/li><li>Something black \/ something white<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong>  Choose an opposites book to share with your little one. \u00a0Read it a couple of times. Reiterate the opposite word pairs and call them opposites. Try reading it a third or fourth time, reading a word and letting your child give you the opposite word.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several commercially prepared opposite cards that you can purchase from a teacher\u2019s store, or you can make your own. \u00a0Look for pictures in magazines and create your own opposites book!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for ways you can illustrate opposite words by demonstration. \u00a0For example, walk across the room s-l-o-w-l-y.  Then walk across the room as fast as you can. \u00a0Slow and fast are opposites.  Show your child a Ping-Pong ball, then show him a beach ball. Describe one as very little, the other as big. Big and little are opposites.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep on presenting opposite pairs as you think of more. \u00a0And review any opposite books you may come across.
