Games and Activities for Infants (9-12 months)

Your child will begin to use objects as tools – using a spoon to chase food around on the plate. He may enjoy interactive games such as tickling and letting him tickle you and “talking” on the phone. Problem-solving skills are beginning to develop and your child begins to understand words and recognize the names of familiar objects. He will likely want to put most objects into his mouth.

  • Push toys and walkers
  • Shape sorters or plastic containers with balls and objects (develops eye-hand coordination, visual-spatial relationships)

Games and Activities for Toddlers (18-24 months)

At this stage your child wants to be more independent, but still appreciates the help from you. Your child learns by getting her hands into everything. She will fiddle with knobs, open and shut doors, and flip light switches on and off. Toys with interlocking parts – pop-up toys, nesting toys, sorting toys, trucks with doors that open and shut – create endless opportunities to explore.

At this age, children learn best from unstructured play.
  • Toys to play house
  • Large and small blocks

  • Illustrated Books and CD’s – nursery rhymes; ask your child if he can name things seen in the pictures

Games and Activities for Toddlers (24-30 months)

At age two, your child may become more assertive, but her defiance really results from her desire for independence and her continuing need for help. Your child may be testing her limits.

Along with independence comes expanded language skills. Your child can now speak in short sentences and has become more purposeful, telling you what she needs or wants. Your child is also beginning to understand abstract concepts. She can ask for more milk, and inquire about whether she can go to bed later. However, she still doesn’t understand the concept of time (e.g. in two days, next week, in a month). Your child can form images in her mind, and may be able to organize her toys by size, or color, or shape.
 
  • Ride-on toys (especially ones that “hold cargo”)
  • Balls – soft ones for throwing; set up hoops using wastepaper baskets; a few will on occasion catch a ball; draw two lines and play a simplified game of soccer
  • Art supplies that allow for creativity. Introduce tempera paints with various size paint brushes
  • Percussive instruments – tambourines, rhythm sticks, drums; march to the beat of different music genres
  • Dress-up clothes
  • Child-size household equipment – vacuum cleaners, workbench, small table and chairs
  • Construction toys
  • Puzzles and manipulatives

Games and Activities for Toddlers (30-36 months)

Your child will want to learn to put on his own T-shirt, take off his own pants, and wash and dry his own hands. He may want to include other children in his games, and he’ll really begin to relate to and focus on other kids, which allows him to play more structured games.

As your child gets older, he will become increasingly imaginative. He will start developing his own story lines, characters, plots, and adventures. Giving him clothes and props for pretend play – something as simple as a cardboard box can be a wagon, a spaceship, a fort, and so on – will help encourage this area of development.

  • Jigsaw Puzzles – look for ones with large, simple, and easy recognizable pictures; works on problem solving and eye/hand coordination
  • Beginning board or memory games – Chutes and Ladders, I Spy, Memory
  • Kitchen set
  • Mega Blocks or Lego Duplos
  • Art Supplies – crayons, clay, collage materials, watercolors, finger paints
  • Outdoor equipment – swings, basketball hoops, bats, golf-sets, soccer balls
  • Books that are age-appropriate and more sophisticated; your child can follow narratives and more complicated words and stories

Making Moon Sand

Ingredients
9 cups flour
1 1/4 cup baby oil
3/8 cup powdered tempera paint (to make colored moon sand)
Instructions

  1. Add powdered tempera paint to flour in large container and mix well.
  2. Mix in baby oil.
Children will love molding the sand and exploring the texture. Add measuring cups, scoops, and small plastic containers to expand exploration.
 
Moon sand will keep several weeks in a sealed container.

Felt Story Characters for the Old Testament

You can also copy the pictures and cut them out to make booklets with young children. They provide ways to teach stories that are very difficult to find for preschool age children.
 
Look in the back and you will see a list of all the stories, each on a separate page. At the front of the booklet are larger figures of the characters. The cost is $13.50.

Learning to Make Right Decisions

When they fail to utilize the knowledge they have, we think it wise to let them learn the result of wrong thinking. “Would you like orange juice or apple juice this morning?”
“What toys shall we get out to share with Nancy when she comes over today?” “Will you eat politely or are you ready to get down?”

These are examples of appropriate choices young children may be given when making decisions. Though it’s often easier to make choices for our children, having the opportunity to choose can open a child’s thought in many ways.

The ability to make decisions is an important skill. It leads to responsibility, independence, self-esteem, and a broader understanding of new concepts. It can also teach consequences of behavior. Decision-making requires the ability to discriminate and provides receptivity to learning new concepts. It’s a way of teaching concepts with the child as an active participator. For instance, a child will learn more about color if you ask him to choose between two shirts of different colors than if you simply say, “Today, you’ll wear your blue shirt.”

Here are more examples of questions that teach concepts:

“Would you like peanut butter or cream cheese on your celery?”
“Will you wear the racing car shirt or the striped one?”
“Do you want grapes or a banana?”
“Shall we go to the park or the zoo today?”
“How many Goldfish crackers would you like?”

Asking these kind of questions can be a game, with many opportunities to choose and count, as children discover the amount that different responses bring. At first you’ll need to say, “How many ___? One or two?”, until the child responds with a number without prompting.

It’s also important not to go to the other extreme, by bombarding our children with too many choices. Most parents are able to find their own advantageous opportunities for decision-making.

Decision-making can be helpful in the area of discipline. Reaching the goal of self-discipline requires learning how to make choices, and the choices we give children can help them learn from the consequences of their actions. For instance:

“Will you stay next to me in this store, or shall I hold your hand?”
“Can you remember not to eat the play dough, or shall we put it away?”
“If you want to stay in the room with us, you’ll need to use your quiet voice.”

Children are capable of learning early on what kind of thinking they’re responding to and consciously choose thoughts and actions which lead to true joy, harmony, and satisfaction, rather than to discord and unhappiness. Learning how to make right choices will help support them later when faced with challenging decisions to make. The Bible commands us to, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve;” (Josh. 24:15).

Though it may seem unpleasant to some children to hear the cries of friends whom they have treated roughly, they can learn the true joy of making others feel happy and see the loving response they receive when they are gentle and helpful. We can encourage loving decisions by suggesting helpful actions to children and verbalizing the joy they bring. “See how happy you have made your baby sister? She loves her big brother.”

Right decision-making can eliminate some horn-locking when willfulness enters the discipline scene. It can provide an acceptable way out of an impasse or encourage a happy willingness to do the right thing. For instance, if a child would like to stay and play when it’s time to leave the park, you might offer an acceptable choice such as, “Will you carry the snack bag or water bottle to the car?” This shows the child that right behavior is expected, but that there are still some desirable options.

It’s helpful to think through what important demands we are making of a child in various areas and also what choices we could offer the child in those same areas. These demands, or rules, and choices will, of course, vary from home to home. It’s important for each family to settle on ones that are in keeping with the family values. Mealtime, bedtime, dressing, and social activities are some of the areas to consider in these ways.

Some example rules about mealtime might be:

  • We always eat sitting down.
  • We only eat sweets after a meal, never between meals.
  • We eat at designated times rather than snacking any time we please.
  • We have polite conversation at the table.

Some choices might be:

  • “Which napkins shall we use?”
  • “Would you like to dip your chicken in ranch dressing or ketchup?”
  • “How many carrots would you like to eat?”

As you work with the concept of offering children appropriate choices along with reasonable limits (and these do change as the children mature), they will have many opportunities to utilize their thinking skills constructively.

Bible Books for Preschoolers and Their Parents

Parents of preschool children can begin a wonderful Bible study time by reading the Bible stories out of some marvelous beginning Bibles. A parent can start with Bibles that have cartoon pictures, and simple words, and graduate up to more realistic illustrations. A parent can even just ‘tell’ the story to their child, showing the pictures, with the King James Version open in their lap.
When students begin to read, one can read the story out of the King James Bible along with the beginning versions of the Bible and share the stories that way. Before bed, is a good time to read a few of these familiar narratives, and talk about the values and principles in them with your child, perhaps right before he/she falls asleep.
There are hundreds of Bibles to choose from, and you can look at Amazon.com or go to a bookstore to find them, but here are a few to get you started.

One of the earliest lessons taught in infancy should be the lesson of obedience.  Without obedience there can be little progress in any direction.  The parent who sometimes exacts obedience and sometimes does not is committing a great wrong. The parent who, through pride, will excuse or conceal his child’s mistake, protecting him from the just penalty due that mistake, may injure his child for life.  Love should be stronger than pride.
This means that from infancy, children should be taught obedience to Principia, forgetfulness of self, patience, endurance, courage in the right, self-control, and faith in God.

Principia School Acorn Program

Easy-to-Make Finger Paint

Ingredients

4 tablespoons of sugar
1/2 cup cornstarch
2 cups cold water
2 tablespoons liquid dish soap
Containers
Food coloring*

* (You can use liquid watercolors, too, but I’ve had better luck getting vibrant colors with paste food colors.)

Instructions

  1. Stir the sugar and cornstarch together in a small saucepan.
  2. Add 2 cups of water and stir over medium heat until the mixture thickens.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Stir in dish soap.
  5. Divide into containers and add food coloring as desired.
  6. DO NOT cool in refrigerator!
