At the recent joint FYE and Remote Teaching Faculty Learning Community, participants were invited to respond on a Google Jamboard to answer and share what they\u2019d learned about online teaching this semester.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some highlights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of lessons learned that I hope to keep in mind next semester are these pointers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It really forces you to focus on what you want to cover and how.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more material you have generated before the term, the better.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I made a sign by which to inform newcomers to check the chat box.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be painfully precise whenever possible about things like the instructions for the activity and how long it will take. It helps to have it typed out and ready to copy and paste into the chat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom reactions [once I found them].<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome them to class and see how they are.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can still create a sense of community remotely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice makes perfect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Slides work great for group work because you can see what they are doing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn to be more relaxed in class. Have fun with the students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to find connection with students &#8211; it just takes some creativity!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for feedback often.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need two screens!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students in an asynchronous discussion board share much more fully than in &#8220;homework&#8221; or class discussions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your instructions need to be very detailed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Some cautions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s harder to stay up to date with discussion boards than I thought.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be flexible! You\u2019ll need a couple of backup plans for nearly every activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have to wait way longer than I think [I need to] when I ask if they have any questions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are Zoomed out.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom time can run away on you!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How confusing audio inputs can be.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes longer to cover the same amount of content.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>And we\u2019ve all heard,<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re muted!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Finally, one participant said,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s \u201calways a work in progress.\u201d Agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more on using Google Jamboards in your classes (and maybe even meetings), see <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/walking-around-the-zoom-room\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
