Sometimes I assemble slideshows and speak briefly about each artwork as it relates to the studio artist&#8217;s search for hints and inspiration, but I doubt that these resulting lectures have been the best way to inspire students to greater artistic ambition and awareness of our roles as artists continuing a long tradition.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After seeing Molly Broere use Google Slides and a Jigsaw activity in New Faculty Learning Community meetings, I set up three activities with the basic structure of giving students a limited amount of time to research and prepare responses to share via Google Slides (see links with each bullet below). In my first three such activities, students<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acted as docents for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/10ufX1o3pquQgE711usgtM5l6DIwU5NTVSArnm8h6Esw\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtual Gallery Tour<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/sites\/jameskschmidtgallery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carolyn Lord exhibit <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(ARTS 105)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summarized tutorial videos and artist portfolios relevant to a highly customizable assignment with altered books (ARTS 330: <\/span><a href=\"about:blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered Books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduced each other to contemporary artists relevant to a portraiture assignment (ARTS 301: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1s7DpMb1TMeaevxxesNaUL1LrT3jTe8C20M1k91pWtU4\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transformative Portraiture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By creating these education spaces for the students, I like to think students felt more agency and involvement in their own learning experience.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Advantages of this approach:<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time to prepare before presenting boosts student confidence. This reduces barriers for shy or multilingual students.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s less intimidating than a formal presentation. Anything to do with the word \u201cpresentation\u201d and \u201cslides\u201d tends to form a negative first impression of the activity. I emphasize that the activity is casual, clarify that nobody is being marked down for filler words, and replace references to \u201cpresenting\u201d with \u201cintroducing the class to [an artist\/technique].\u201d<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student engagement and subject matter retention seems better than with long lectures.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructors and students can refer back to the slides throughout the project.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consolidating class slides reduces time lost during presentations to tech handoffs.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructors can control for quality by steering students to particular sources (if research skills aren\u2019t the assignment\u2019s main goal).<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Advantages specific to remote learning:<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructions for the activity can be located on the slide to<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce miscommunication about the duration of the activity or its goals<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eliminate the time lost to students navigating elsewhere for instructions or asking me to repeat instructions<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable students to pace themselves within breakout rooms<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shared Google Slides allow instructors to look over students\u2019 shoulders, which means<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less disruptive creeping into breakout rooms<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more clues to when students have stalled in an activity and need help<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Browser-based slideshows reduce the need to translate instructions between operating systems.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This activity could be synchronous or asynchronous. (This is especially reassuring if you distrust your internet or a device\u2019s reliability on a particular day.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Tips &amp; things I\u2019m still troubleshooting:<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Budget more class time than you would for your equivalent lecture.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/t5\/Instructional-Designer\/Publish-and-Embed-a-Google-Slide\/ba-p\/244476\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embed Google Slides in a Canvas assignment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but Canvas won\u2019t know to remind you to grade this assignment.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I treat this as an in-class activity, so I have no advice on how this would work for a longer-term or larger-stakes assignment.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructions within placeholders like \u201creplace this box with an example of the artist\u2019s most famous work\u201d worked well for my students.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider setting up a sample slide and presenting it before students begin their research (to model the amount of detail you prefer).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most students assume they&#8217;re limited to a single slide unless you tell them otherwise.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students need access to a computer. I doubt that a student calling into class with a tablet or smartphone could complete this activity.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link editing privileges in Google Slides to people with a link and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/principia.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">principia.edu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> access.
