That way, class can keep moving until I (or they) can rejoin.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some guidelines I\u2019ve found useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Integrate the lesson with the current activity and outcome. <\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For example, students in one of my writing classes are working on transitions, so I\u2019ve prepared two exercises for practicing transitions that support the essay they\u2019re writing for the class. In addition, I\u2019m developing a guided small-group discussion plan that supports the current reading assignment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Communicate the purpose.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Students reasonably want to avoid anything that looks (remotely) like busy work, and especially if I have to be offline, they need to know how the backup activity relates to their coursework.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Provide parameters.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">How long should the lesson take? How will students share the results of the activity? Can they work in teams?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Assign responsibility\u2014to everyone. <\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">When the class regroups, everyone should have something to contribute. If students have responsibility for reporting back, they\u2019ll be much more likely to make productive use of the activity\u2014and to maintain the class momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have suggestions for backup lesson plans?
