Strong sentences are made up of a few important elements, but I\u2019m going to focus on just one: parallel structure.<\/p>\n<p>Your initial question may be, <em>what exactly is parallel structure? <\/em>Basically, it means keeping the structure of your sentence consistent and balanced. Your objective is to put similar grammatical ideas in similar grammatical form\u2014noun forms, verb tenses, etc. What this looks like in practice can be broken up into different categories.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, parallel structure is used when writing about items in a series. Whether it is a noun, adjective, or a verb, it is important to use the same structure for each item.<\/p>\n<p>For example, someone may write:<\/p>\n<p><em>My best friend loves skiing, playing outside, and to write. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This sounds awkward and clunky. To make the sentence parallel, you must write all the verbs in the same form:<\/p>\n<p><em>My best friend loves ski<strong>ing<\/strong>, play<strong>ing<\/strong> outside, and writ<strong>ing<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This sounds much better because all the verbs now end in -ing. You could also fix this scenario like this:<\/p>\n<p><em>My best friend loves <strong>to<\/strong> ski, <strong>to<\/strong> play outside, and <strong>to<\/strong> write.<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now all the verbs are in the infinitive form.<\/p>\n<p>Another occasion to be aware of using parallel structure is when you use a coordinating conjunction (**quick refresher: the coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so**). This means the subjects between on either side of the coordinating conjunction should use the same structure.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p><em>Principia\u2019s Tutor Cafe is a wonderful place to<strong> develop<\/strong> writing techniques and practi<strong>cing <\/strong>research skills. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once again, this sentence sounds awkward because the verbs are not parallel. (You might be tricked by the -ing on \u201cwriting,\u201d but that\u2019s just a noun form.) Let\u2019s try this:<\/p>\n<p><em>Principia\u2019s Tutor Caf<\/em>\u00e9<em> is a wonderful place to deve<strong>lop<\/strong> writing techniques <u>and<\/u> pra<strong>ctice<\/strong> research skills. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now \u201cdevelop\u201d and \u201cpractice\u201d are parallel, and the sentence works!<\/p>\n<p>The final case to use parallel structure is in the case of correlative conjunctions (**quick refresher #2: these are conjunctions that connect equal grammatical elements, such as <em>both&#8230;and\u2026; either&#8230;or&#8230;; not only&#8230;but also; <\/em>etc.). These come into play with parallel structure because you must make sure that the grammatical structure of the sentence remains consistent from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<p><em>The WISE workshops are not only a place <strong>to get <\/strong>help with assignments, but also <strong>work<\/strong> productively. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This sentence sound incomplete because it\u2019s not parallel! Let\u2019s fix that:<\/p>\n<p><em>The WISE workshops are not only a place <strong>to get<\/strong> help with assignments, <u>but<\/u> also <strong>to work<\/strong> productively. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get\u201d and \u201cto work\u201d balance each other out.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully those examples clear up any confusion you had about parallel structure. Now you can write grammatically balanced sentences with ease!
