{"id":2681,"date":"2018-11-28T14:03:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T20:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/?p=2681"},"modified":"2018-11-28T21:04:57","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T03:04:57","slug":"snowball-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/snowball-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"Snowball effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the semester comes to a close, time becomes more precious. &nbsp;Having students engaged and participatory can take away some scheduled class time, but there is a strategy to that you can implement which&nbsp;<\/span>provides students an opportunity to share their ideas while an <span>encouraging them to help keep the conversation moving. &nbsp;This strategy is affectionately known as the \u201csnowball effect.\u201d While attending a pre-conference session at the 2018 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/podnetwork.org\/\"><span>POD Network<\/span><\/a><span> Conference, I learned how this technique can allow all ideas to be shared and keep the group momentum. &nbsp;Here is a way the \u201csnowball effect\u201d works:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In groups, have students work on an assigned task, like generating a list of topics covered over the course of the semester on a giant post-it or whiteboard<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the groups are finished, have students displace their ideas, and have one member from the group share out the ideas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the student is sharing for one group, the other groups must pay attention to see if their idea(s) has (have) been mentioned. &nbsp;If the idea has already been shared, then they cannot share their idea and should share another idea(s) from the Post-it<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process is repeated until all groups have shared<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the ideas get rolling, the latter groups won&#8217;t need to take as much time sharing everything and will only spend time on sharing what has not be shared yet.&nbsp; This could be a great review for an exam or test, or this could be a culminating activity to review and recap the entire semester.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the semester comes to a close, time becomes more precious. &nbsp;Having students engaged and participatory can take away some scheduled class [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[110],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2681","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-teaching-tips"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/p5DI6r-Hf","_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2681","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/9"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2681"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2681\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2684,"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2681\/revisions\/2684"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2681"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2681"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2681"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
