{"id":2649,"date":"2018-10-30T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/?p=2649"},"modified":"2018-11-19T13:51:23","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T19:51:23","slug":"week-10-reading-strategy-say-something-reboot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/week-10-reading-strategy-say-something-reboot\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading strategy: Say something reboot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few weeks ago, I was training my mentors, and I gave them a scholarly article to read about mentoring competencies and programs. &nbsp;The article had a lot of dense information and needed to be read carefully, so I decided to teach them the \u201cSay Something\u201d strategy. &nbsp;A strategy they could teach and use with their mentees. I first learned about this strategy in October 2017. To read the original blog post about the strategy, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/say-something-reading-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">click here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick recap of the strategy is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group the students in pairs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have the students take turns reading aloud to one another (They can determine the length of the reading (paragraph, column, page, etc.). &nbsp;More advanced readers are not going to stop as frequently, but they should make sure to stop.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Person A reads. At a predetermined stopping point, the person who was not reading (Person B) says \u201cSay Something,\u201d and Person A should do one of the following:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a prediction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask a question<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarify something you had misunderstood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a comment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a connection<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the partners switch roles, and Person B reads, and Person A listens and says \u201cSay Something.\u201d &nbsp;Person B responds in using the same options as above. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat until the time runs out or the article\/page is completed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I put my mentors in pairs and told them to read the article applying the strategy. &nbsp;Afterwards we came together to debrief the strategy. The mentors recognized that the strategy is a great way to encourage (or coerce) readers to stop and think about the text. &nbsp;By stopping, the reader is given the opportunity to process the concepts and ideas mentioned in the text.
