{"id":2048,"date":"2016-10-22T10:38:04","date_gmt":"2016-10-22T16:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/?p=2048"},"modified":"2016-10-26T12:53:47","modified_gmt":"2016-10-26T18:53:47","slug":"a-penny-for-your-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/a-penny-for-your-thoughts\/","title":{"rendered":"A penny for your thoughts?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Ariana Dale<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not going to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/beat+around+the+bush\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beat around the bush<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; idioms are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phrases.org.uk\/meanings\/the-bees-knees.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the bee\u2019s knees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So are puns, but I don\u2019t want to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/bite+off+more+than+can+chew\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bite off more than I can chew<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with this blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up, my family had a vocabulary that was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/off+the+charts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off the charts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Their word usage used to fly <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/over+one%27s+head\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">way over my head<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and I\u2019d sit there thinking I\u2019d only be as smart as them <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/when+pigs+fly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when pigs fly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! As I got older and started to understand <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/ways-of-the-world\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ways of the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I found that my understanding of their crazy antics came more frequently than just <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/once-in-a-blue-moon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">once in a blue moon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coolest part about idioms is that they rely on an individual\u2019s historical knowledge, and they tell a story with only a few words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the idiom \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/Elvis+has+left+the+building\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elvis has left the building<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is only understandable if you know how popular the singer Elvis, \u201cthe King of Pop,\u201d actually was. Additionally, the story goes that this phrase was used to let the crowd know that the Elvis had actually left and that no more encores would be played. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another cool idiom is \u201conce in a blue moon.\u201d This one essentially indicates that something happens very rarely, as a blue moon only appears once every three years or so. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, here\u2019s one more I bet you didn\u2019t know: You are \u201cthe bee\u2019s knees!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is generally used to say someone is absolutely superb, and its historical origin is quite extensive and a bit confusing; see <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phrases.org.uk\/meanings\/the-bees-knees.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Phrase Finder, the term \u201cbee\u2019s knees\u201d initially was thrown casually about<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just one of many \u201cfashionable nonsense terms\u201d used during the roaring \u201920s that somehow stuck. (Other such terms include the \u201ccat\u2019s whiskers\u201d and \u201cthe snake\u2019s hips.\u201d) It could also be in reference to a famous ballet dancer in New York in the 1920s, Bee Jackson. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/God+knows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God knows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, I hope this hasn\u2019t just gone <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/go+in+one+ear+and+out+the+other\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in one ear and out the other<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
