{"id":1971,"date":"2016-09-13T14:25:50","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T20:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/?p=1971"},"modified":"2016-09-13T14:25:50","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T20:25:50","slug":"trying-something-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/trying-something-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Trying something new"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So yesterday I decided to let my students decide what their discussion expectations were going to be.\u00a0 Normally I have a rubric that tells them my expectations and how I want the discussions to look in class, but I had a notion to try something new by having them create a list of expectations they wanted for their peers.<\/p>\n<p>First, I had the students write down their own list of expectations.\u00a0 I wanted them to think about how they believed everyone should be treated, behave, and be graded.\u00a0 They generated their own list on a piece of paper. Then I had them post their lists on the whiteboards so all of us could view them at once.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1973 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/class-discussion-exp-3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"class-discussion-exp-3\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1974 size-thumbnail aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/content.principia.edu\/teaching-excellence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/class-discussion-exp-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"class-discussion-exp-1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After everyone wrote their ideas on the board, I had them spend some time reading each other\u2019s expectations to find commonalities.\u00a0 From their lists, they were able to come up with a unified list of expectations that include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trust in the discussion<\/li>\n<li>Take risks and share ideas<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared<\/li>\n<li>Respect other\u2019s ideas<\/li>\n<li>Let one person speak at a time<\/li>\n<li>Be honest and compassionate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After they created that list, we had a discussion about how this should (and could) be graded.\u00a0 After some ideas were generated, we decided to have the students self-reflect on the discussion and how they upheld the expectations.\u00a0 We also discussed that they would grade themselves and explicitly explain why they feel they deserved said grade.<\/p>\n<p>While I am not sure what this will look like in practice, I am excited to see how they use these expectations that they put forward.\u00a0 I am looking forward to continuing to build our classroom community and discourse as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What is something new that you have tried?
