FALL 2013: ALTA Conference

In October, writing specialist Ellen Sprague and Dr. Karen Haire, visiting faculty in writing, presented bilingual readings of their translations at the American Literary Translators Association conference at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Ellen read her English translations of French essays from Philippe Delerm’s Le trottoir au soleil (Sidewalk in the Sun) and Karen read her translations of DS Matjila’s fiction, Bodibeng jwa Matlhomola (Seas of Sorrow), from Setswana, a South African language. Three students—senior Julia Suber (French/English major), freshman Gwenydd Kirkpatrick (plans to be a political science major, East Asian studies minor), and Nea Torres (one-year enrichment from Brazil)—traveled with Ellen to spend three days as conference participants. Karen, Spanish professor Dr. Duncan Charters, and Spanish/French professor Cecily Lee joined in on the final day.
