Sure sure, being a lifelong learner is a great idea, but how does one pull that off in our current system. If this statement is true then how does one ever finish a class? How should we think about finals in our classes? Do you give exams? Papers? Presentations? A more important question is why you give them and what you hope to accomplish with them? This week at the teaching excellence lunch discussion we will look at how we cross the finish line. If you have any ideas about what works for you come 10th week come and share. If you are looking for some new ideas come and listen.

Hope to see you there,

C) First Year Experience (an avenue to introducing young students to college life)

D) Free Your Ego (a spiritual self-help session with D. Chopra)

Sure sure, we know the answer is C, but what does this mean? FYE has specific goals, but how are we meeting them? Come to this week’s Lunch Discussion to hear from Steve Hinthorne and Heidi Snow on their experience with First Year Experience. They will share the process they used to meet the goals of the program and discuss the merits and difficulties of interdisciplinary teaching. Come join us at the fac/staff dining room between 12:15 and 1:30. Remember Lunch is Still on us.

Three Great Ideas at an unbelievable price!!!
The Teaching Excellence Center is at it again. In an effort to reduce our current inventory, we’re handing out fresh ideas at no cost to you. That’s right – 3 ideas to use in your classes = $0.00. If you are asking yourself, “how can this possibly be true?! There must be a catch!”, think again! We will be handing out to anyone who joins us for lunch 3, that’s right, 1-2-3 ideas for invigorating classroom teaching. You will receive “Think, Pair, Share,” a great activity that helps your students analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information. You will also receive “Three stay and one stray,” which offers a forum for an exchange of ideas and social skill instruction all in one package. But we are not finished. You will also get “Pass the problem” to get your students excited about problem solving. Three ideas at no cost to you! And just to show you how committed we are to reducing our idea inventory, if you show up at the fac/staff dining room between 12:15 and 1:30, WE WILL THROW IN LUNCH FOR FREE!!! Just ask yourself if you can afford to miss this amazing opportunity. Join us this Friday!

Hope to see you there,

Oppression of the Whole Man

When dealing with processed chicken, any part of the chicken will do. When thinking about our particular style of education at Principia a little more thought is necessary. This week the Teaching excellence group wants to Focus on Education at the Principia with a particular focus on the Whole Man concept. Do all five parts of the whole man get equal representation in the classroom? If this is an academic institution, should the intellectual part of the whole man only get 20% focus? In EAP the phrase “whole man” appears four times. On p. 46 and 52 the phrase “whole man” is mentioned. On p. 69 MKM gives the definition of whole man and on pg. 157 she mentions the “whole man” as socially, intellectually, and spiritually. Come join us this Friday from 12:15- 1:40 in the Faculty/Staff dining room to discuss “whole man” education in the classroom. Remember lunch is on us, just tell the cashier that you are with the lunch discussion.
