June, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) surveys its membership for a proposed list of the ten greatest architects in America. They include Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, H.H. Richardson, Louis Kahn, Thomas Jefferson, Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, I. M. Pei, Bernard Maybeck, and Frank Furness.

April 19, Principia College designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of Interior. October 11, official ceremony on the Chapel Green honoring Maybeck’s campus as a National Historic Landmark. Guests include The Honorable Richard J. Durbin, United States Representative from the 20th District of Illinois (in 1996, he was elected and became a United States Senator from Illinois), and Carolyn Pitts, Architectural Historian, National Parks Service, History Division.
