Why are you interested in Japan?
Japan is a land of such significance, and it’s going to be the most wonderful opportunity to have an on-the-ground, hands-on experience in a thoughtful, practical way. Although I’ve never been outside of the United States for an extended period of time, going to Japan will tap into my inner desire to travel abroad and drink in our world, especially East Asia. In fact, I’ve wanted to travel to East Asia for as long as I can remember, more than any other place. When I first heard about the Japan abroad as a freshman, I had a feeling this would be the perfect abroad for me. And while it’s incredible to travel to any country, I believe that Japan will be especially unique because it’s a place in which so many aspects of life intertwine in the most beautiful, fascinating and multi-faceted setting.
What are you most looking forward to experiencing/learning in Japan?
This particular abroad appeals to me so much because I have a genuine interest in so many academic and anthropologic areas; at the top of this list, however, is the intersection of history and current affairs, along with the evolution of culture. Because Japan is at a crossroads right now, it will be the perfect setting in which I can learn about and take in this country through all of my intersecting – “crossroading” (!) – interests. Being in Kyoto for classes and homestays sounds so exciting, and so do the rest of our sights and travels throughout the country.

“For many years I have prayed daily that there be no more war, no more barbarous slaughtering of our fellow-beings; prayed that all the peoples on earth and the islands of the sea have one God, one Mind; love God supremely, and love their neighbor as themselves.” (My. 286:3)
